The Panathenaic Stadium was erected and given its monumental form in 338 BC (mid 4th century BC) as part of the public works carried out in the city of Athens by the orator Lykourgos. It was refurbished in 1896 for the first modern Olympics. Athletes then and now have long competed for coveted honors on its oval track. A temple of Tychy (Fortune) once stood on the far hill.
