Located 27 kilometers (17 miles) west of Athens is situated in the center of the Saronic Gulf, roughly triangular in shape, with an area of 87.41 km2 making it the second largest island in the Gulf. Its shores are 57 km long. Its soil is volcanic, with the northern regions being made up of sedimentary rocks while the southern volcanic part of the island is rugged and mountainous, and largely barren. Its highest rise mountain is the conical Mount Oros (532 m) in the south.
